The panel “Storytellers”, which highlighted the importance of women’s perspectives in film, plural narratives, and positions of power and decision, began this Thursday the 16th edition of the Monterrey International Film Festival.

Janeth Aguirre, Executive Director of the Ficmonterrey, was in charge of moderating the virtual talk and she thanked the participation of outstanding panelists, to whom she said, “we are at a distance, but we are close because we can see our faces through these screens in this new normality».

In the panel composed by Sofía Segovia, author of «El murmullo de las abejas»; Márgara Millán, author of the book «Derivas de un cine en femenino», and María Reneé Prudencio, actress and screenwriter of film, theater and television, and moderated by Aguirre Elizondo, deepened on the urgency of breaking hegemonies, and making way for stories and narratives that tell the reality of women.

«I am an advocate that the narrative has to have a look… you have to tell your story because if you don’t, someone else is going to do it and it’s going to do it wrong. I’ve seen that more and more, women are encouraging themselves to take up that space to tell the stories and I think as we occupy it and establish ourselves, not as women’s storytellers for women, but narrators of human beings for human beings and that we can transmit well the stories of women, from our perspective, I think we can move forward on this path against violence and towards understanding» said Segovia.

On the other hand, María Reneé Prudencio defended the importance of «breaking the fear» of positions of power, while academic Márgara Millán, stressed the importance of showing that «women are talking about the totality».

This panel, broadcast live through all the social media of the Festival, was the first of eight panels that the V Women In Cinema Encounter presents during this event, which will take place from 13 to 20 August.
